This listing is for one sashiko kit OR a sashiko sampler cloth. Please choose if you would like to purchase the kit or the sampler cloth using the pull-down menu.
This wonderful sampler features a white colored cloth that is pre-printed with an origami crane (tsuru) pattern. The pattern washes out of the cloth with water. This hitomezashi (one stitch sashiko) sampler was created by Olympus Japan and is meant to be used with their new, thin sashiko threads. 100 meters of thread is needed to complete the sampler. 5 skeins (100meters total) of standard sized sashiko thread can also be used to complete the cloth.
Please choose either the sashiko sampler or sashiko sampler kit.
*The sashiko sampler contains one white colored cloth that is pre-printed with the origami crane pattern. This is perfect for anyone that already has their own sashiko supplies or wishes to use a different color of thread than what is available in the kit.
*The kit contains one white colored cloth that is pre-printed with an origami crane pattern, an Olympus brand sashiko needle and one ball of Olympus thin sashiko thread in a vermillion (#215) color. The large ball contains about 100 meters of 100% cotton, thin sashiko thread.
This is a perfect project for beginner sashiko artists. I find that these samplers are also wonderful for traveling with as they are small and do not require you to pack a large amount of supplies. The marks are also easily seen (for less than perfect lighting) and will not rub off when the cloth is folded away.
"Hana-Fukin" translates to "kitchen towel" however this sampler can also be used to create a quilt block, small coaster/placemat or 12 inch (30.5 cm) pillow.
The entire cloth measures about 27.5 long x 13.5 wide (69.9 cm long x 34.3 cm wide). The printed portion of the cloth measures 11.75 inch x 11.75 inch (29.8 cm x 29.8 cm) in size. The printed portion of the sampler can be seen in the 2nd photo.
The sampler is printed on 100% cotton fabric that is lightweight and has a slightly open weave.
Each sampler comes with an instruction sheet HOWEVER this sheet is printed in Japanese. This sheet can be seen in the last photo.
Do NOT iron the fabric prior to removing the pre-printed pattern or the pattern may not wash out completely.
To remove markings:
Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly.
Iron while still moist on low temperature. Place sashiko cloth face down onto folded bath towel, prior to ironing, to prevent the stitching from being flattened.
