Vintage, Japanese Tokamachi tsumugi, pongee, kimono silk - rose pink with floral - 63 inches (160 cm)

Sorry, this item has sold.

This listing is for 1 yard and 27 inches (63 inches or 160 cm) of fabric. The fabric is a continuous piece.

This beautiful, tsumugi pongee fabric was once part of a kimono. Therefore, this fabric has been used but it is still in very good condition. There are some flaws in the panel. Please read the description carefully to learn about these flaws. This silk would make an amazing table runner, scarf, quilt, pillow case or skirt. It can be used for apparel but please remember that kimono fabric is not as wide as other fabrics.

Tsumugi is created out of "waste silk" that is pre-dyed prior to weaving. The "waste silk" creates the slubbing and texture that is associated with tsumugi.

This gorgeous tsumugi is a "Tokamachi" tsumugi. Tokamachi tsumugi is produced in Tokamachi city and the surrounding areas located in the Niigata Prefecture. Tokamachi tsumugi has a distinctive luster that is not always seen in other tsumugi fabrics.

This tsumugi features a woven design of flowers, leaves and vines in orange, yellow, green and white hues over a rose-pink colored background.

The warp and weft threads of tsumugi are usually different colors (called shot fabric) giving the fabric a wonderful depth of color. Traditionally the weft threads of tsumugi are black. The weft threads of this fabric are a deep, red-orange hue while the warp threads are a white hue. Some of the weft threads are thicker than the warp threads. This creates a fabric that has a great depth of color that changes in the light. The fabric can appear a pale rose pink to a rose color with red undertones depending on the light.

This tsumugi has a crisp, woven texture that is very similar to dupioni silk. It has a lovely sheen that is not typically seen in other types of tsumugi. The sheen is also similar to dupioni silk. Tsumugi is difficult to wrinkle.

The last photo shows the colors most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were placed in the photo for color comparison. **Please note that the orange color of the flowers is appearing a bit less vibrant than actually seen in person. This may be due to the reflection of the light off the fabric**

The fabric panel has the following flaws:

**The fabric was folded lengthwise when it was sewn into a kimono form. The fabric reflects the light a little differently along the crease line. The crease line is about 3 inches (7.6 cm) cm) from the left selvage. A closeup of this line can be seen in the 8th photo. A second, less noticeable crease line can be seen about 2 inches (5 cm) from the right selvage line.

***A line is present on the reverse side of the fabric. I believe that this line was created by the seamstress when the kimono was sewn. It runs along the left selvage edge and is about 2 7/8 inches (7.3cm) from the selvage edge. A photo of this line can be seen in the 9th photo. This line can not be seen on the right side of the fabric EXCEPT when the fabric is held up to the light.

*I am always willing to provide more information or pictures regarding my fabrics or using/sewing these fabrics. Please do not hesitate to send me a convo if you have any questions.*

I believe that the pictures show a good representation of the fabric colors however, please remember that colors may look different on your monitor. This is a vintage item so there may be small blemishes or marks in addition to those noted in the description. This item has been stored for many years so there may be a slight storage smell although I do not notice one.
