Asa hemp yukata fabric - by the yard - creme with red and pink floral

This listing is for one yard (36 inches or 91.33cm) of fabric. There are multiple yards available. If more than one yard is purchased then you will receive the entire yardage as one complete length.

Asa is a reed based fabric (flax, hemp) that was produced primarily in Pre-WWII Japan. Asa was produced for summer clothing, bed covers, noren and other household items prior to the introduction of cotton into Japan.

This beautiful, hemp blend fabric is unused and would make a wonderful sheer curtain, wall hanging or table runner. It can be used for apparel but please remember that kimono fabric is not as wide as other fabrics. I do not see any stains or flaws on this fabric.

The fabric has a woven design of red-purple, red and pink flowers and petals over a creme (off-white with yellow hue) colored background. The background also has short, pink stripes. The fabric has a wonderful "crinkly" texture with "wrinkles" running the length of the fabric. This texture gives the fabric a "rustic" or "un-ironed" look. The last photo shows the colors most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were placed in the photo for color comparison. Please enlarge the photos to see the wonderful texture and color of the fabric.

This yukata fabric is primarily created from hemp but also appears to have some cotton. It could also contain some other fibers. Hemp is known for being a cool fabric and is also strong, resistant to mildew and UV light. The fabric is rough in texture and has a slightly open weave. Photo's 8 and 9 show how sheer this fabric is. In photo 8, I placed a ruler under the fabric and in photo 9, my hand is visible through the fabric when I hold it away from the table.

This fabric is very stiff and has a stiff drape. Hemp is known for softening after frequent washing so this fabric may soften. I did wash a small sample of fabric and it did soften, possibly due to the removal of the starch, but it was still quite stiff. Some of the "wrinkles" were removed after washing but steaming the fabric caused the wrinkles to form again.
