This listing is for one, 170 meter skein of Daruma 20/4 sashiko thread that was hand-dyed with kakishibu persimmon tannin. There are 2 hues available. Please choose the color of the skein you wish to purchase using the pull-down menu.
This thread is 100% cotton and made in Japan especially for sashiko but can also be used for sewing, mending, knitting, crocheting, knotting, decorating and boro. The cotton is also mercerized to increase the luster and strength of the thread.
This thread is size #20/4 (20 denier, 4 ply) 19 grams
This is the same thread that is on the Daruma 40m cards. These threads tend to stay smoother and do not get too "fuzzy" when stitching with longer lengths. This thinner thread is also more suitable for stitching through multiple layers of fabrics (like quilting) or when using fabrics with a tighter weave. The thread can also be doubled if desired.
I hand - dyed this thread with kakishibu (persimmon tannin) and then I treated the yarn with an iron modifier which creates a beautiful gray hue.
The thread is a little stiffer than the undyed thread. This is due to the kakishibu dyeing. It is NOT as stiff nor rough as a hemp yarn however it is not as fluid as it was originally. It should become softer with use.
The kaki-Shibu dye also acts as an insect deterrent and prevents mold. Fishing nets and stencil paper are also often dyed with kakishibu due to these reasons.
The color of kakishibu dyed items will gradually change due to exposure to ultra-violet rays, oxidation, temperature and humidity, therefore the color will vary throughout the yarn itself and over time it will change. Please note that the color of the yarn you receive may vary slightly when compared to the photos.
There are two hues of thread available. Each skein is hand dyed and colors may vary slightly from batch to batch. The Pewter gray color has a slight warm undertone.
Please note that the skeins will have some variability in the color throughout the skein with the lightest colors having the most variability.
The last photo shows a comparison of sashiko threads. The thickest threads are to the left.
