This sashiko sampler contains one navy colored cloth that is pre-printed with an Tobi-Asa-no-ha (scattered hemp leaf) pattern. The pattern washes out of the cloth with water. This is a perfect project for beginner sashiko artists. I find that these samplers are also wonderful for traveling with as they are small and do not require you to pack a large number of supplies. The marks are also easily seen (for less than perfect lighting) and will not rub off when the cloth is folded away. The design can be embroidered with one 20 meter skein of sashiko thread.
"Hana-Fukin" translates to "kitchen towel" however this sampler can also be used to create a quilt block, small coaster/placemat or 12 inch (30.5 cm) pillow.
The entire cloth measures about 27 inches long x 13 inches wide (68.6 cm long x 33 cm wide). The printed portion that features the design measures about 11.75-inch x 11.75 inch (29.8 cm x 29.8 cm) in size. Traditionally the cloth is folded in half and the stitching is done though 2 layers of fabric.
The 100% cotton fabric is lightweight with a slightly open weave. Please refer to the photo with the crayons for the most accurate representation of the navy blue cloth color. The fabric is a dark, navy blue. Crayola brand crayons were placed in the photo for a color comparison and are not included in the listing.
The sampler includes a printed instruction sheet with drawings. The instructions are in Japanese only. These can be seen in the 5th photo.
Do NOT iron the fabric prior to removing the pre-printed pattern or the pattern may not wash out completely.
To remove markings:
Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly.
Iron while still moist on low temperature. Place sashiko cloth face down onto folded bath towel, prior to ironing, to prevent the stitching from being flattened.
Please note that if you order a large number of thread or small items the shipping weight may be overestimated. Be assured that I always refund shipping cost overages of $1.00 or more. You may also wish to contact me so that I can set up a special order for you, which will have the accurate combined shipping costs. I do not charge handling or packaging fees.
