Modern Japanese Rice Pouch Komebukuro - Full kit

Sorry, this item has sold.

This listing includes all that you need (except sewing machine and thread) to create your own Komebukuro.

The kit contains the following items:
-one printed instruction sheet for creating your own Modern Japanese Rice Pouch (Komebukuro). This pattern was created by Karen Stevens.
-Vintage cotton for bag lining
-Kakishibu dyed linen/cotton blend fabric for exterior of bag. I personally dyed this using kakishibu (persimmon tannin)
-One 20m skein of Olympus brand sashiko thread in #15 red color.
-One 20m skein of Olympus brand sashiko thread in a #5 Goldenrod color
-One Olympus brand leather thimble
-One set of 2 Olympus brand sashiko needles
-72 inches of vintage, Japanese cording in a dark brown color (for creating drawstring)
-5 pieces of vintage, indigo and white yukata cotton for bag tabs and patches. Each piece is approximately 7 inches long x 14 inches wide. Patterns included in kit may vary from what is shown. These are vintage fabrics and may have small flaws, such as stains or holes.

The sewing pattern comes with a printed, paper sheet that has both written instructions and a diagram explaining how to create a rice pouch. This pattern is suitable for beginners but is also a fun project for the more experienced. The project stitches up very quickly.

Use the included yukata fabric and sashiko supplies to sew patches on your bag to create a "boro" inspired komebukuro.

The last photo shows a rice pouch that I created using this pattern. This is not available for purchase but is pictured to show what a finished bag can look like. This specific komebukuro was created using vintage, brown cotton yukata fabrics and a kakishibu dyed trim tape. (not included in this kit)

Difficulty level: Beginner

Approximate finished dimensions:

6" square x 7" tall [15.25 x 17.75 cm]

Sewing pattern description:

A modern take on the Japanese Komebukuro, a traditional pouch used in Japan to carry rice offerings to the temple during religious ceremonies, or to hold gifts destined for a close friend or relative. Komebukuro bags were hand sewn in a patchwork style using a mix of whatever fabrics were on hand, and closed with a cotton drawstring cord. This is a perfect project to use up all those extra scraps of fabric and add your own unique style. You can be as simple or complex as you’d like. And it is fully reversible! The perfect size to carry around your latest knitting project, or use it as a lunch tote!

This turned out to be a very easy project and super cute rice pouch. A little small but there are instructions to size up for next projects.
