This listing is for one yard (36 inches or 91.33cm) of fabric. There are multiple yards available. If more than one yard is purchased then you will receive the entire yardage as one complete length.
This beautiful cotton fabric is unused, old stock (deadstock) and would make an amazing scarf, quilt, pillow case or skirt. It can be used for apparel but please remember that kimono fabric is not as wide as other fabrics. This fabric is in excellent condition and I do not see any holes or staining.
The fabric has a white key-fret (sayagata) pattern over a dyed deep indigo - blue colored background. The cotton is smooth and has a stiff drape. This fabric has not been laundered therefore it has some some starch in it. The cotton will become softer and more fluid after washing.
The pattern was created on the fabric using a stencil and resist paste. The resist paste is applied to areas where the fabric should be white and then the fabric is dyed. The paste is then washed away leaving a white pattern.
The last photo shows the colors most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were place in the photo for color comparison. This fabric is a deep indigo color. I do not know if it was dyed using botanical indigo, synthetic indigo color or a combination of both, which is often used to create a darker color. The tag did not specify how it was dyed and it is difficult to determine by eye.
-Fabric is 14.25 inches (36 cm) wide.
- light to medium weight
-Minimal stretch from selvage to selvage
-Minimal lengthwise stretch
-stiff drape due to starch
-Made in Japan
The color may transfer to other items due to friction or moisture.
Wash separately and rinse thoroughly.
Do not leave the fabric in water as it will cause the color to bleed.
Hand washing is recommended because the fabric may lose it's shape when machine washed.
Wash in cool water. Iron on cotton/steam setting with a cloth between iron and fabric.
*I am always willing to provide more information or pictures regarding my fabrics or using/sewing these fabrics. Please do not hesitate to send me a convo if you have any questions.*
I believe that the pictures show a good representation of the fabric colors however, please remember that colors may look different on your monitor. This is a vintage item so there may be small blemishes or marks although, I do not see any. This item has been stored for many years so there may be a slight storage smell although I do not notice one.
