Turner Japan odorless liquid kakishibu natural dye - shipped from USA

This listing is for liquid Kakishibu (Persimmon juice dye). The kakishibu is available in 500ml or 1L bottles. Please choose the bottle size and quantity of bottles you wish to purchase using the pull-down menu. Sorry, I am only shipping this item within the USA at this time.

Kakishibu is created by fermenting persimmon juice. The resulting liquid has a high tannin concentration which imparts color upon anything it is applied to.

Kakishibu is widely used on wood, bamboo, paper, and natural (non synthetic) fabrics. Dyeing wool with kakishibu isn't recommended as it makes the wool very stiff.

The kaki-Shibu dye also acts as an insect deterrent and prevents mold. Fishing nets and stencil paper are often dyed with kakishibu due to these reasons.

This is a safe and natural dye that has no adverse impact on the environment. No pre-treatment of the dyestuff is required and although you can modify the color after dyeing it is not needed. My favorite modifier is Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate). This helps to soften the fabric and give it a more "traditional" brown hue.

The color of kakishibu dyed items will gradually change due to exposure to ultra-violet rays, oxidation, temperature and humidity, therefore the color will change over time. Please note that the color of the dyed item will continue to darken as it ages. Eventually you will find that the color will "stabilize".

The last three photos show fabrics that I have dyed with kakishibu. The first is a Kona cotton PFD fabric, the second is a cotton canvas, the third is a 1/4 yard cotton trim and the last is a vintage, 100% cotton crochet yarn.

The bottle and instructions are in Japanese but I will provide a translation with personal tips with purchase. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I am by no means a professional but I have been using Kakishibu for a number of years and will try to answer any questions that I am able to.

Kakishibu is most often diluted to a 1:2 ratio (1 part kakishibu liquid to 2 parts waster) therefore you can expect a 500ml bottle to yield 1500ml (1.5L) of liquid for dyeing.

This kakishibu is odorless (or nearly odorless) and does not have the strong fermented smell of other kakishibu.

Iron Oxide (metal rust) will create dark black areas on the dyed item if it is exposed before the kakishibu is finished drying. Please do not allow it to come in contact with metal (metal pot, clothespin with metal etc. ) until it is done drying.

Please note that Kakishibu can not freeze or it will not be usable. If it is old or stored at a low temperature then it may gel. It may be possible to restore gelled kakishibu by gently boiling it. Only dilute the amount that you require for your current project as it will gel quicker once it is diluted. Store the undiluted kakishibu in a cool (not cold), dark area. It is recommended to store it above 10 C (50 F)
