This beautiful silk fabric was part of an unfinished furisode kimono. The furisode kimono is traditionally worn by young, unmarried women and is one of the most beautiful and decorated kimono. This silk was basted together into the kimono form but was not finished. Because of this the fabric is pristine EXCEPT for tiny pinholes and creases. There are also marks on the selvages. These marks were made by the seamstress and are only on the selvage and should not affect how the silk can be used. These marks do not extend more than .5 inches (1.3cm) from the selvage.
This silk would make an amazing scarf, wrap, hair accessory, pillow case or skirt. It can be used for apparel but please remember that kimono fabric is not as wide as other fabrics.
This fabric was a body panel of the kimono. It went up one side of the front of the kimono, over the shoulder and down the back. The entire panel is about 142 inches (361cm) long x about 14.75 inches (37.5 cm) wide. This panel has no cuts in it (as many panels from finished kimono often do).
Each end of the panel has a beautiful, dyed design featuring white, lavender, pink and yellow sakura (cherry) blossoms over a pale mauve and red background. The larger, white sakura have lavender, yellow and pink centers. Some of these blossoms are also accented with gold metallic paint.
Photos 2 and 3 show each end of the panel where the cherry blossoms were printed onto the silk. The middle of the panel is seen in photo 4 and it also has a small, printed design of 3 cherry blossoms. The remainder of the panel is a solid, deep red color.
Close-ups of the printed areas on each end of the panel can be seen in photos 5 and 6. The first printed portion measures about 24 inches long (61cm) x 13 inches (33cm) wide. Please note that the cherry blossom design only extends to one selvage edge. The second printed portion measures about 19 inches (48cm) long x 14.75 inches (37.5cm) wide.
The silk is a medium weight, crepe or chirimen type silk. It is NOT smooth but has a lovely "orange peel" texture and a subtle sheen. Please enlarge the photos to see the beautiful color and texture. The last two photos show the colors most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were place in the photos for color comparison.
I believe that the pictures show a good representation of the fabric colors however, please remember that colors may look different on your monitor. This is a vintage item so there may be small blemishes or marks although, I do not see any. This item has been stored for many years so there may be a slight storage smell although I do not notice any.
